Audiovox 8940
Introduction
This web-page provides information about the Audiovox 8940 1xEVDO phone offered through Verizon Wireless.
Tests were performed with Software 0160VE4T07_2.173 and Hardware TX-160C_REV_04.
Camera Quality
It's a phone, so I don't expect much quality here, but the camera is definitely a disappointment. Here are some pictures taken at max resolution (1280x960) and 'high' quality setting with the 8940.
A reference picture was taken using a Canon PowerShot S70 digital camera. The reference picture was cropped and scaled to 1280x960 to give a best-possible comparison at the same resolution as the 8940.
I attempted to correct problems in each picture from the 8940. Both the unmodified original and processed pictures are shown.

| This outdoor picture includes detail in bright areas (the snow) and dark areas (the building's side in shadow). The 8940 highlights are way off, the snow looks completely yellow and the sky is green. I was able to correct most of the yellow and green in post-processing. The 8940's picture turned out ok, but the sharpness is very lacking. | ||

| This poster really stresses the resolution of any camera. The 8940 picture required a bit of a brightness boost in post-processing and the white highlights needed some color correction to get rid of the yellow-green hue. The reference picture shows just how much detail is possible with 1280x960. Overall the 8940 did ok, but again the sharpness is lacking. | ||

| These two shots are macro shots taken at about 1 foot away. The 8940 did a really disappointed job at these two. The text is readable, but just barely. The biggest problem with this is the color accuracy. Notice the saturation of the wood in the reference shot (which is accurate by the way). The 8940 has almost no color in the wood and I was unable to bring it out with post-processing. The overall color accuracy is also bad, the mid-tones are green and the highlights are yellow. Also note the burn-out in the lower right. Overall the 8940 completely failed these photos. | ||
mini-SD card
Verizon has crippled the mini-SD functionalify in the Audiovox 8940. It can only be used for 2 things. 1: Source media for the mp3 player. 2: Storage for pictures/videos, but those are only readable by the phone itself. These restrictions are only detailed once the phone is purchased in the manual and the quick start reference. The relivant pages are displayed below:
